21st Century initiative to prepare Illinois students for the information age economy – Review Atlas

On Wednesday morning Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn promoted the I-Connect Initiative that will provide a personal laptop computer for all seventh grade students in Illinois public schools. Laptop computer initiatives in other states have significantly improved…

How much of this kind of publicity is grand standing? The costs involved in deploying and supporting laptops must be staggering. The laptops we have in our school are problematic at best. Our wireless network is unreliable and spotty. The time our teachers get for training is non-existent, and our district is considering drastic cuts in spending, staff and programs starting next year.

Now we’re expected to support laptops for all seventh graders? What about sixth and eighth graders? What about class sizes exceeding 30? What about cuts in Fine Arts, Reading Support and Social Services?

Hey Pat, how about we close this loophole and put the money into basic services so schools have the time, money and morale to deploy technology how they want?
